Type I: offer the greatest buoyancy (over 20 pounds) and are designed for offshore use. They can turn an unconscious person face up in the water.

Type II: offer 15.5 pounds of buoyancy and are designed for near-shore use. They can also turn an unconscious person face up in the water, but not as effectively as Type I.

Type III: offer 15.5 pounds of buoyancy and are designed for recreational use. They are more comfortable and allow more movement, but they do not turn an unconscious person face up in the water.

Type IV: are not worn, but held onto, by the user. They are throwable devices, such as cushions or rings, that can provide extra buoyancy in an emergency.
Type V: are special-purpose devices that have specific features or functions for certain activities or conditions. They may be inflatable or non-inflatable.
